About this service

We provide statutory Independent Mental Capacity Advocacy (IMCA) for people in Ealing who lack capacity to make a specific decision about serious medical treatment or long-term accommodation, and who don’t have family or friends to speak for them.

IMCAs can also be instructed to support with adult safeguarding or care reviews.

For safeguarding cases where the person lacks capacity and protective measures are being proposed.

For care reviews where the person lacks capacity and a decision is being made about accommodation being provided by the local authority or NHS for a period of 12 weeks or more.

You can find out more about what working with an IMCA might look like by reading Daniella’s story.

Who is it for?

People in Ealing who lack capacity to make a specific decision.

When is it available?

When a person has been assessed as lacking capacity to make a decision about serious medical treatment (SMT), a long term change of accommodation (LTA), or protective measures being proposed as part of adult safeguarding, and there is no friend or family available to support with the decision.

What does the advocate do?

Helps you understand information about the decision to be made, and finds out what you would like to happen. Attends a best interest meeting to make sure your wishes are considered, and the decision made is in your best interests.

How to access the service

IMCA referrals must be made by professionals involved in the decision making.
