About this service

Our Speaking Up group in Westminster supports people with learning disabilities to have a voice, share their experiences, and influence local services.

Members of Our Choice help people speak up for themselves through:

  • Self-advocacy and consultation groups for people with learning disabilities (PLD)
  • Presentations, training, and mystery shopping to improve services.
  • Accessible information in Easy Read, using objects of reference, Makaton, and intensive interaction to support creative conversations.
  • Information on voting and elections transport campaigns like ‘Please offer me a seat‘, and co-production of NHS NWL Easy Read ‘Know Diabetes’ web pages.

All disabled people have the right to be heard. We can change the future by speaking up.

Member of Our Choice

Learning Disability Service User Reps

Many of Our Choice members are also Service User Representatives, who play a vital role in making sure that people’s voices shape decisions that affect their lives. 

They are:

  • Elected and paid for their work
  • Active members of local Health and Social Care Focus Groups
  • Partners with senior council and health professionals.

Our Reps help to:

  • Co-produce the Bi-borough Learning Disability Strategy
  • Sit on local health and care boards
  • Improve access to employment and training opportunities Support fair and inclusive recruitment, including interviewing staff
  • Deliver training and quality-check Easy Read resources.
