Why advocacy matters
In health and social care, we’re often surrounded by statistics. It’s easy to lose sight of the real experiences of people behind the numbers. When so many of those statistics are about not getting the basics of what they need, it can be hard to remember the difference we do make.
We know that sharing these stories isn’t always easy. Sometimes, protecting someone’s privacy means we can’t tell their story in full. Others are still on their journey. And advocacy outcomes aren’t always neat or simple. But even when invisible, advocacy still makes a difference. Through creative and respectful storytelling, we find ways to celebrate those quiet victories too – the moments of change that remind us why advocacy matters.
Here, we shine a light on the real experiences behind our work – stories from the people we support and from the dedicated staff who stand beside them. We hope these will help bring advocacy to life for you – showing how it empowers people to find their voice, make informed choices, and shape the decisions that affect their lives.

The advocate I had was very attentive and flexible around my needs as a service user…knowing I had a voice on the ward in relation to my care and treatment was a lifeline!

If it wasn’t for your outstanding support, I would have felt trapped and alone. I am extremely grateful for what you do.
Ali
The IMHA service at The Advocacy Project probably saved my life…The fact I had an advocate meant I had a voice, even when I couldn’t full articulate myself.
