What is Synergy?

Synergy is a ‘Speaking Up’ group made up of people with learning disabilities who work with The Advocacy Project in Camden.

The Synergy team is a confident, experienced group of Reps who use their lived experience to make sure local organisations, networks and decision-makers understand the importance of inclusion, accessibility and clear communication.

Who can join?

Synergy also has members, and anyone with a learning disability 16+ living in Camden is welcome to join. Members are invited to accessible events, meetings with the council and other organisations, and multiple volunteer opportunities to support accessibility in the community.

Our Reps and members attend local meetings, speak at events, and run groups that help people with learning disabilities build confidence, share their experiences, and have a real say in their community.

For the first time in my life, I feel listened to. Meeting others with learning disabilities has made me feel less alone. Now I’m part of something that makes a difference.

What We Do

Synergy works across Camden and North London to make sure that people with learning disabilities help make choices about things that affect them.

We do this by:

Running speaking up groups

For people with learning disabilities, including themed groups such as our LGBTQ+ group and Health and Safety group.

Working with Camden Council

To make sure local services listen to and act on what people with learning disabilities say.

Delivering training and workshops

For hospitals, universities and community organisations on how to communicate inclusively.

Collaborating with local partners

From gyms to cultural organisations like the British Museum, to improve accessibility and inclusion.

Hosting health and wellbeing events

To help bust jargon and make sure that information is accessible to everyone.

Supporting inclusive recruitment

By making sure that interview processes are accessible and include communication styles that suit a range of preferences.

We are a team of seven people with learning disabilities who work as learning disability reps for The Advocacy Project.

Many of us have been in Speaking Up roles for more than 20 years.

In our work, we carry out quality checks, create Easy Read materials, and help people communicate clearly by busting jargon.

We host meetings and workshops, give feedback to the council, run training sessions, and support others with learning disabilities to speak up and be heard.

We’re passionate about making sure people with learning disabilities have a real voice in decisions about their care, local services, and community. Together, we’re helping to make Camden and North London more inclusive and accessible for everyone.
