Building knowledge, confidence and healthier lives through accessible health information
As part of our menopause engagement work, we ran awareness sessions across two learning disability services and consulted with 30 residents.
While many participants were familiar with periods, the consultation revealed that awareness of menopause was significantly lower. Many people were unsure how to seek help if their periods changed, and several women said they would not feel comfortable discussing period-related concerns with family or support workers.
I found the session really useful as I can see why mum behaved a certain way and how I can help.

Following the sessions, every participant said they had learned something new. Feedback highlighted increased understanding of menopause symptoms, greater confidence in knowing when to seek support from a GP, and reassurance that it’s okay to talk about periods and meonpause with trusted people.
The sessions also demonstrated the value of involving everyone in conversations about women’s health. Male participants reported that the information helped them better understand the experiences of women in their lives.
Raising Awareness of Menopause
In this video, we hear from Nicole as she share more about what menopause is, how a GP can support those going through menopause, and how companies can best advise and help people with learning disabilities understand and manage it.
